New Lithuanian-Latvian handbook – a bridge between two neighboring nations

In order to strengthen the cultural and language ties between Lithuania and Latvia, a unique Lithuanian-Latvian phrasebook has been published, which is becoming an important tool for the people of both countries to get to know each other better. This publication was implemented within the framework of the Interreg VI-A Latvia-Lithuania Programme 2021–2027 project “Language – the key to understanding your neighbor” (LingoKey).
The LingoKey project was born from a simple but important idea – language is the main key to understanding your neighbor, their culture and traditions. Although Lithuania and Latvia are neighboring countries with a long common history, the language barrier often prevents people from fully communicating and establishing closer ties. This handbook is the bridge that helps to overcome this obstacle.
The book is created in a particularly practical and easy-to-understand form. Its structure covers various topics of everyday life that are relevant for both children and adults. Here you will find conversations on the topic of getting to know each other, you will learn numbers, the names of the days of the week, months and seasons, you will get acquainted with the world of colors. The book pays a lot of attention to polite phrases and etiquette rules that will help you feel confident in any situation.
Family members and relatives, school environment, getting to know city spaces, hobbies and leisure, pet care, shopping in a store, and vacations and travels – all these topics are presented clearly and simply to make the learning process as enjoyable and effective as possible. The material is adapted so that even beginners can quickly start using a new language in practice.
The handbook is not just a simple collection of words. On its pages you will find a bilingual dictionary that works in both directions – both Latvian-Lithuanian and Lithuanian-Latvian, and helps you quickly find the words you need. The songs and poems included in the booklet not only help you memorize new phrases, but also enrich cultural understanding. Games make learning more interesting and interactive, especially for young readers.
At the end of the handbook there is a notebook, which is especially convenient for writing down new words, observations, travel impressions, addresses or other important details. This multifunctional structure makes the handbook not only a learning tool, but also a travel guide and a diary of personal discoveries.
The handbook is primarily aimed at school-age readers, but the booklet will also be useful for adults who want to learn the basics of their neighbors’ language.
