The nature restoration work in the river Daugava adjacent area in the Ruģeļi neighbourhood is the largest part of the UrbUmbrella project. Restoring urban wetlands using nature-based solutions is an innovative method that will promote long-term protection and preservation of biodiversity.
The project aims to promote the protection and preservation of biodiversity affected by climate change and human activities by preserving wetlands using nature-based solutions in the urban wetlands of the cross-border region of Daugavpils (LV) and Zarasai (LT)
Based on field research and bioclimatic modelling by Daugavpils University scientists in the Daugavpils wetland area, appropriate wetland restoration activities are being carried out. For the first time in the region, using a joint approach that includes the umbrella species concept, nature-based solutions and natural disturbance emulation (emulation of natural disturbance – grass fire – by removing the grass layer with a bulldozer in a mosaic way, emulation of natural disturbance – spring flood of the river – by removing mud from the catchment area, emulation of natural disturbance – beavers – by trimming bushes and trees in a mosaic way, emulation of natural disturbance – pond drought – by converting a permanent pond into a temporary pond, regulation of a biodiversity zone, regulation of illegal roads, etc.), wetland preservation is carried out.
As part of the project, the naturally restored area adjacent to the river Daugava in the Ruģeļi neighbourhood in Daugavpils will be freely accessible to public, while the wetland area will be protected from pollution and unwanted human impact.
